For Heidi Pompilio, those smaller moments deserve just as much intention as the milestones we traditionally plan entire events around.
That philosophy sits at the heart of Simply Gather Picnics, Pompilio’s Clifton Park and Saratoga-area business creating personalized picnic experiences for couples, families, friends and anyone looking for a different way to celebrate.
From romantic dates and marriage proposals to birthdays, bridal celebrations, girls’ gatherings and children’s tea parties, Pompilio approaches each setup as its own experience. The goal is not simply to create something beautiful enough for a photograph. It is to create an environment that encourages people to actually enjoy being together.
And behind those carefully styled tables is a founder whose business began long before she officially gave it a name.
Creativity That Started at Home
Pompilio has always been drawn to decorating and finding ways to give ordinary occasions an unexpected “wow” factor.
Some of her earliest testing grounds were her daughters’ birthday parties.
Rather than simply decorating a space, she became invested in creating an entire experience around the celebration. The details mattered. The atmosphere mattered. Most importantly, she wanted the people attending to feel like they were part of something special.
Others began noticing.
Friends and acquaintances would see what Pompilio had created and ask whether she could do something similar for their celebrations. Those requests eventually revealed something important. What she had viewed as something she simply loved doing was something other people valued enough to seek out for themselves.
Simply Gather Picnics grew from there.
It gave Pompilio a way to combine her creativity, eye for decorating and love of bringing people together into a business centered on creating experiences for others.

The word “luxury” can immediately conjure images of extravagance, expense and excess.
Pompilio sees it differently.
For her, luxury is about how an experience makes someone feel.
It can be arriving at a beautiful setting and realizing the table is already arranged, the decorations are in place and the details have been handled. Instead of unloading supplies, arranging flowers, setting a table or wondering whether everything looks right, the client gets to simply arrive.

The finished setup may look effortless, but Pompilio knows that the word “effortless” rarely describes what happens behind the scenes.
Every picnic begins with understanding the occasion and the person behind it.
Some clients arrive with a complete theme. Others may have nothing more than a date, a color or a general idea. Pompilio takes those starting points and begins building an experience around them, considering the occasion, season, setting and personality of the celebration.
Inspiration can come from almost anywhere.
Magazines, shopping trips, home improvement programs, colors, interior décor and even objects completely unrelated to picnics can eventually become inspiration for a tablescape or theme.
Then comes the work guests never see.
Décor has to be gathered and prepared. Elements need to coordinate. Everything has to be transported to the location, arranged and checked. After the celebration ends, the process happens in reverse, with breakdown, cleaning, organization and preparation for the next event.
The preparation is extensive precisely so that the client’s experience does not have to be.
Creating Something That Belongs to You
Personalization is also what Pompilio believes separates Simply Gather from simply making a restaurant reservation.
A restaurant may offer beautiful surroundings, but those surroundings generally remain the same regardless of who sits at the table.
Simply Gather starts with the people.
Décor, tablescapes, photographs, personal touches and the overall atmosphere can be built around a specific occasion. Indoor and outdoor options allow Pompilio to adapt the concept throughout the year, while seasonal colors, textures, flowers and decorations can completely change the personality of a setup.
Bubble and teepee experiences add another dimension, transforming the picnic into a more private and immersive environment. The bubble can provide a cozy option across different seasons and weather conditions, while the teepee creates something more intimate and whimsical.
That flexibility has allowed Pompilio to think beyond what a “picnic” is supposed to look like.
Finding a Place in the Capital Region
For a business built around experiences, the Capital Region offers plenty of possibilities.
Pompilio sees parks, outdoor spaces, local businesses and unique venues throughout the region as potential backdrops for future gatherings. She is equally interested in the community of business owners surrounding those spaces.
As Simply Gather grows, collaboration is becoming part of that vision.
Pompilio has begun developing relationships with other local professionals who can complement the experience, including food providers, a seasonal flower grower, a photographer and someone who can provide drink service for larger gatherings. She is also exploring additional relationships for winter flowers and indoor rental spaces during the colder months.
For Pompilio, those relationships need to be genuine.
She does not want to recommend another business simply for the sake of having another name on a vendor list. She wants to know the people, understand their work and feel confident about the businesses she brings into a client’s experience.
That approach reflects a larger goal of growing alongside other small businesses in the region rather than operating separately from them.
Building Something New
Creating a beautiful business and getting people to know that business exists are two very different challenges.
That has been one of Pompilio’s biggest lessons as a new business owner.
A good concept does not automatically translate into awareness. Building a name requires patience, consistency and considerable work that customers may never see.
For Pompilio, however, those challenges are being met with signs that Simply Gather has room to become something larger.
Clients are already beginning to approach her about experiences that stretch beyond the traditional picnic concept.
One upcoming project is a “porch party,” where Pompilio will bring the Simply Gather aesthetic and creative approach to an event without incorporating a picnic at all.
It represents an interesting evolution for the business.
Simply Gather Picnics may have started with picnics, but Pompilio is beginning to recognize that the real product is something broader: the experience itself.
She envisions expanding into new themes, seasonal concepts, unique locations, collaborations and increasingly personalized celebrations while maintaining the intimacy that inspired the business in the first place.
Making the Moments Between the Milestones Matter
Perhaps the most compelling part of Pompilio’s approach is that she does not believe people should need a major life event to justify celebrating.
Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and graduations will always matter.
But so can a new job.
A girls’ afternoon.
A family gathering.
A date night.
An accomplishment that might otherwise receive little recognition.
Or simply deciding that spending time with someone you care about is reason enough.
Pompilio believes some of the best memories can emerge from moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
A recent proposal picnic brought that idea into particularly sharp focus for her.
She created the setting where a couple would become engaged, arranging the romance, atmosphere and small details surrounding a moment they are likely to remember for the rest of their lives.
That experience also gave Pompilio a glimpse of what she ultimately wants Simply Gather Picnics to become.
Not simply bigger.
Meaningful.
Years from now, success for Pompilio would mean continuing what she is doing today, only on a larger scale. More celebrations. More creativity. More collaborations. More people trusting her with moments that matter.
Because for the person receiving the experience, it may be one picnic, one proposal, one birthday or one afternoon.
For Pompilio, it is an opportunity to become a small part of a memory someone may carry for the rest of their life.
And that might be the best explanation yet of what it means to collect moments, not things.
